Gender and Management
While there have been great strides in the workplace in terms of gender equality, there are still a number of areas where inequality is prevalent and very serious. Perhaps one of the most glaring examples of this is in the area of “management.”
Studies conducted recently have shown that while women are more frequently taking jobs in management positions, especially in formerly “male-dominated” fields such as banking and insurance companies, they are generally less respected in these roles than their male counterparts.
However, this disparity was not found in fields such as medicine and education, where individuals surveyed reported that they were more familiar with women in managerial roles.
Reasons for Inequality
Women in managerial positions in financial institutions were consistently ranked lower than men in similar positions for a number of reasons, according to employees. One of the most common explanations employees gave for disrespecting female managers is that they said women often acted “like men” in the workplace in an attempt to gain respect from employees. Employees interviewed said that women who were too aggressive as managers were not likely to receive employee respect.
However, that being said, employees frequently disparaged male managers who were too aggressive in their managerial styles, as well. In general, studies have shown that employees respond most positively towards managers who lead in a more interactive and democratic style, rather than an aggressive and authoritarian manner.
Nevertheless, even when female managers lead in a democratic manner, studies reveal that they are less likely to receive the same respect that men in their same position would enjoy.
