Labor Unions
Among workers in a particular field, labor unions can be an important vehicle for ensuring workers’ rights. Typically, a labor union is an organization that functions as the representative of workers in a particular field. For example, a union may represent teachers, police officers, or dock workers. Most often, labor unions represent employees who are in the public sector.
Labor unions are an important tool in bargaining or ensuring fair treatment among workers in a field, as it provides a united front to management / local officials. In the past, labor unions have been especially effective in dealing with issues such as:
- Unfair wages
- Unsafe working conditions
- Breach of contract
- Unfair / unsafe working hours
- Benefits
While labor unions are not as significant or prevalent as they were at their peak in the 1950s, they still are an important part of both the public employment sector and the political world, especially to the Democratic Party, and in many cases unions will affiliate themselves with larger and more prominent activist organizations.
Two of the most well known activist organizations that work with unions are the AFL-CIO and Change to Win Federation, which was formerly part of the AFL-CIO until it splintered off in 2005. However, despite the split, both these organizations work with unions and fight for policies and legislation that benefit workers.
In the private sector, the situation is a little different. The National Labor Relations act of 1935 governs unions in the private sector, and these unions are overseen by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
