Migrant Workers
With the incredible amount of agricultural production in the United States, migrant labor is a key factor in ensuring that the volume of work that needs to be done each year is completed. Migrant labor is a term that applies to individuals who travel from their countries of origin to the United States each year to pick crops and then return home once the harvesting season is complete.
Some workers, however, move from field to field across the United States as different types of produce come into season. In fact, many of these workers are employed and transported by contactors that have arrangements with certain farms to supply them with the workers they need to harvest their crops.
Rights for Migrant Workers
There have been several pieces of legislation passed to ensure that migrant workers are treated fairly by their US employers. Especially in the 1960s, there were a number of highly publicized protests and movements to ensure fair treatment of migrant workers due to problems of unsafe working conditions and unfair pay.
One of the most important pieces of legislation ensuring the rights of migrant workers is the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act (or MSPA). This act is monitored by the Wage and Hour Division of the US Department of Labor’s Employment Standards Administration. It makes sure that employers provide fair wages to migrant and seasonal workers.
