Shift and Night Work

Most people work jobs from around 7 am to around 6 pm. These hours constitute "normal business hours." A large number of people have to work odd hours, however, generally called shifts. As the name and description imply, the latter people's hours are outside of normal business hours. Such shifts may be throughout the night, such as from 10 pm to 6 pm or 12 am to 8 am. Others may work afternoon/evening/night shifts, such as from 2 pm to 10 pm.

Shift and night workers are crucial to society. The tasks and functions they perform often go unnoticed but impact society in fundamental ways. Yet, such workers often do not get the care and attention that they not only deserve, but also need.

Individuals who work nights and other shifts face increased risks when compared to people who work normal business hours. For one thing, people who work shifts or nights, especially nights, often work during times when the body does function at top performance. Consequently, they may not be able to perform their work effectively or completely safely because of physical or mental exhaustion.

For example, construction workers who work during the night may not be as aware of dangers as they would be during the day. Similarly, because people who work shifts or nights work when most people are not working their social lives may suffer. Shifts and night workers may go into depression, may experience family stress, or may become increasingly angry because of their situation.

It is important for both employees and employers to be aware of the risks involved with shift and night work. While employees have responsibility to ensure that their living practices are healthy, employers also have the responsibility to ensure that shift and night workers have safe environments and that they have opportunities to take care of their health.
