What is wrongful termination?

Wrongful termination is a situation in which an employer has discharged or laid off an employee in a method that violates a legal right of the employee. Wrongful termination is not simply being fired in an unfair way; an actual legal right must have been violated. Those rights include violations of public policy, breaches of contract, breaches of implied contract, breaches of covenant of good faith and fair dealings, and discrimination.
